Without a name or title, it is not possible to behave in the world, that is why a name is known as a ritual.  It is only through the name that a person achieves success in the world, it is through the name that all the actions are carried out, and it is through the name that a person attains fame. That is why the name should be kept very thoughtfully.  For worldly behavior, it is necessary for every person to have some name. In Indian religious texts and Smriti texts, the name has been considered as a sacrament and it is known as Namkaran Sanskar.

 

In Indian culture, there has been a tradition of keeping only words with meaning as names, and along with having meaning, only the word that gives auspicious meaning is kept as a name, and it should be the same name that is suitable for its own.  Reminds one of an ancestor or clan. On the basis of this scale, many kings in Indian culture have been named like Jai Singh II, and Prithviraj III, which remind the memory of their ancestors. In South India, words with meaning are still used.  Along with this, in South India, there is also a tradition of adding the name of one’s father or the name of one’s village to one’s name. But at present, disorders have started appearing in this tradition of naming.  In North India, children are being given names which do not have any meaning.  Till 10, or 15 years ago, children’s names in India were named with English words and now the situation is that girls are being named Shivanya, Chavanya, and Dakshinya, and boys are being named Ryan, Kian, etc.  Here we see that in Shivanya, even after breaking and combining the words Shivanya, no meaning of Shivanya comes out.  The same problem exists with other names also.

Giving such meaningless names to children can hinder their spiritual progress.  Along with this, children move away from their clan traditions and start forgetting their history, whereas by keeping a name famous in history and according to the tradition of their clan, the children and the next generation remain connected to their clan and history.  That is why parents should name their children with meaningful words only.
